CASE STUDY
The Entrepreneur - Bristol Evening Post Competition
Empica came up with the concept and launched a major new marketing initiative in 2011 with our client SEGRO giving a new or fledgling business the chance to win a business unit free for a year at SEGRO’s Ashton Vale Trading Estate.
Called The Entrepreneur, the competition is being run in the Bristol Evening Post, the main daily newspaper in the area and is open to businesses within the newspaper’s circulation area.
To win the prize, worth over £30,000, businesses have to send in an overview of their operation and outline why they think they should win the unit which includes the lease for 12 months incorporating rent, rates and service charge.
Entrants will then be shortlisted, with those successful being invited to present their case in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style presentation to a panel of judges. The judging panel includes the representative from the Bristol Evening Post, the bursar of Bristol University, Chris Davies of SEGRO, Tim Davies from Colliers International and Rob Law who is a local entrepreneur and brains behind the hugely successful ‘Trunki’ brand and who appeared on the BBC’s Dragon’s Den TV show and gained an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List.
The competition is open to businesses which are already trading or just starting up which would benefit from new premises. Schools, colleges or universities in the area with an entrepreneurial idea are also eligible if they have an idea which would use the unit creatively for a year.
The winner will be announced at the newspaper’s black tie Business Awards in June.
A series of open days have also been arranged so those considering entering can take a look at the unit before they submit their entry.
The competition is being heavily promoted in the newspaper and is giving SEGRO and the bristolworks cluster of trading estates significant exposure across the greater Bristol area. It has been praised by local MP and deputy Speaker of the House of Commons Dawn Primarolo and welcomed by major business figures and the Federation of Small Businesses.
Part of the strategy to run the competition is to promote SEGRO’s active management policy. So by providing a business the opportunity to have a unit for 12 months for free not only demonstrates SEGRO’s presence in the area but also it’s willingness to help businesses achieve their objectives.
By partnering with a major media organisation Empica has leveraged major coverage locally for SEGRO while at the same time demonstrating SEGRO’s willingness to help tenant businesses grow.
