ROLLOVER LANDS TOP PRIZE FOR EX HOSPICE NURSE

A former nurse at St Peter’s Hospice has scooped £5,000 in the charity’s weekly lotto prize draw.

Brenda Cook, who lives in Whitchurch, won the prize when her numbers came up resulting in her winning the cumulative second prize rollover.

Having not been won for a number of months meant the prize topped £5,000 and the retired nurse, who worked at the hospice for 15 years, enjoyed her winnings by splashing out on her family during Christmas and getting a new green house for her allotment.

She has also upgraded her car as she still supports the charity by acting as a volunteer driver.

And despite having retired two years ago, Brenda continues to support the charity whenever she can, not only helping drive people to the day hospice but by also playing the lotto.

She said: “It was a real shock to find out I had won. I only really play the lotto to help the charity so to win something was a bolt out of the blue.

“Having worked for the hospice for many years I saw at first hand how important a role it plays for people in the local community. There are very few people in Bristol who are unaffected by the work it does so I like to help out in any way I can.

“Playing the St Peter’s Hospice lotto is an easy way for me to continue this support. I’ll definitely keep playing to make sure this fantastic charity continues to provide the care and help that it does.”

Costing just £1 to play, the odds of winning one of the prizes are considerably more favourable than playing some national games*.

The first prize is a guaranteed weekly payout of £1,000 with the second prize being £150. However, should the numbers not come up for the second prize the money is rolled over with the fund reaching a maximum of £5,000.

Anna Ross, lottery manager said: “It’s fantastic that someone who has given so much to the hospice and continues to give has won this prize.

“Schemes like the Local Lotto are perfect because people can have fun playing and have the chance to get something out of it, while donating money to a good cause.

“The great thing about the St Peter’s Hospice lotto is that, unlike national lotteries, all money raised stays within the local area, helping people in the local community. A higher proportion of the ticket price goes back to the hospice as well which after print and admin costs equals 60p in every pound.”

“It’s really easy to sign up and it’s only £1 a week. All the information is on our website and you can now join online to make it even easier!”

St. Peter’s Hospice is Bristol’s only adult hospice caring for local people with incurable diseases and giving them a better quality of life. All care is provided free of charge but with the NHS contributing just 23% of the £6.5 million needed to run the hospice yearly, support from the public is essential.

Last year the hospice cared for 2,200 patients in the region and supported over 6,000 family members, including children.
